Movement
During quarantine, attending to physical fitness and emotional well-being under the current restrictions has been a painful challenge. Sports are canceled, our gyms are closed, and acupuncturists and chiropractors are advised to stay home. For many of us, the increase in video meetings and reduction in movement could be contributing to greater joint and muscle pain, and emotion vulnerability. Balanced physical exercise and regular stretching are proven to maximize energy levels, enhance productivity, regulate sleep cycles, motivate nutritious food choices, and reduce the likelihood of emotion dysregulation. In other words, physical activity may provide essential support for those of us struggling with anxiety, depression, mood dysregulation, and sleep disruption.
Prioritizing balanced physical exercise might evoke a sense of willfulness at first (“I can’t do that”, “I don’t have time”, “I don’t have good equipment”, or “what’s the point?”). We have been there! We want you to get creative with how you move you your body throughout your day. Can you take five minutes between meetings to rest your eyes and simply roll your wrists and wiggle your fingers? How about a few jumping jacks before your first cup of coffee? Is there is a fitness class that is offering a digital option? We would like to support you in beginning a regular practice of attending to physical well-being. At Metro NY DBT Center, some of our staff are trained in Yoga instruction and are offering their time throughout the week to provide mini-classes for Yogis of ALL levels! Please check our community calendar for more details.
