Contribution

Scientific research suggests that the act of giving and contributing is a useful pathway to improving one’s own emotional health and well-being. When we practice contributing we are able to take our minds away from our own problems, stressors and worries. We are able to pivot our focus to helping others, in turn boosting our mood and energy. The process of caring and giving to others not only helps regulate our own emotions, but also generates several protective factors such as purpose, meaning, intention and compassion. These qualities help decrease our emotional distress and foster a sense of control. Contributing as a skill can look big and small, and both are equally effective. Some examples we are engaging in during this time are baking treats for neighbors, calling old friends, cleaning up in the house, donating goods to health care workers, and many more. What are the ways you are contributing, while also helping to improve your mood?

CREATIVE INSPIRATION

This is a unique time for all of us and it likely won’t ever happen again (hopefully!).
Wouldn’t it be special to remember this experience? If yes, then we have created a way for you to capture the moment….a quarantine time capsule. The book can include some pages that could describe a Top 15 list (such as movies, tv shows, books, etc.), some pages are for drawing and others for your favorites (such as Face-Time calls, recipes, activities, etc.). With only limited guidance, you have the ability to include your own interesting, fun, and memorable content. A quarantine time capsule is a great way to remember the moment as hopefully, we won’t have a similar opportunity again, anytime soon.

Acceptance
With the continuing public health crisis, we are all asked to face a difficult reality that is challenging to accept and understand. While this is a universal challenge, many of us are also experiencing a range of specific emotions that are inevitable in response to these events. Under the present conditions, many of us feel overwhelmed by the intensity and duration of these emotions.  When these emotions arise, we have a choice. We can refuse to accept the situation and our internal experiences, or we can practice acceptance and work to find ways to tolerate the pain, get through it and regain peace of mind.

When we start to turn our mind towards acceptance, we are bringing in willingness and compassion to work on the reality as it is.  Acceptance is very difficult. A great place to start is to begin to notice and observe your thoughts, feelings and sensations. In doing so, we are approaching our primitive responses to the situation. Acceptance looks like slowly letting go of the war we have with painful responses and pivoting towards observation, willingness and compassion. As a community, what are the ways you are slowing down, observing and turning to acceptance during this difficult time?

Connections- Celebrating Relationships That Help Us Cope With A Crisis
As we begin week four of quarantine, the human desire for connection continues to grow. Although we are working hard to create physical distance between one another, the importance of relationships and emotional connections are vital to our overall well-being. In this moment, we are learning to adapt to find imaginative ways to connect with others while remaining physically distant. During these times, use technology to reach out to loved ones, contribute to your community, or join a group zoom for a fun event (dinner party, talent show, charades, yoga session, cooking class). It is essential to use creativity as a means to maintain relationships and connections even when not physically in the same space.

Inspirations Weekly Newsletter

While many of us have transitioned safely to social distancing, we are struggling to navigate our current lifestyle changes. We are committed to reach out to the staff and clients to remain connected even though we are physically apart. We have a complex dilemma in front of all of us. We have to care for our health, finances and our mental health.

We have set our intention to support you by providing you our weekly newsletter, Inspirations, in order to help you get emotionally organized during this health crisis. Each week we will include words of encouragement, recipes for your physical health, ideas for accumulating positives, humor, photo challenges to motivate action.

Also, we will be including a schedule of free resources to join group online activities with our clinicians and colleagues.

We hope you can join us as a community practicing DBT, so that self care and emotional wellness are part of your practice.

Thank you,

Metro NY DBT Center, PC
